Christian Character Program

Who:  This program is for all Sunday school age children

What:  An incentive program to encourage children to memorize prayers, scriptures, creeds, hymns, Christmas Carols, and etc. as well as to build habits of regular Sunday school attendance and daily prayer.  Being the hands and feet of Jesus during the week is also rewarded.

When:  The program will begin September 2, 2007 and run through May 18, 2008.  The classroom and top girl and top boy winners will be recognized on Youth Sunday.

Where :  Program materials will be given to the children attending Sunday school.  The program materials will also be available in the church office or on-line.  Children may recite their memory verses to participating adults before the Praise Service and receive their award ribbons and beads immediately.  Children will also turn in their Christian Character Weekly Record charts at that time.

How:  How does this program work?

•             Each student receives a memory book containing things to memorize and the point value of each.  When a student has memorized a passage he/she will recite it to an adult listener before the 9:30 service.  The adult will indicate the passage on the bottom of the child's weekly record.  When the child turns in his/her weekly record to Vicki Brunner, the child will receive the appropriate ribbon or bead to add to his/her collection.
•             Every week the student will complete a Christian Character Weekly Record.  This weekly record allows the child to color in squares every time he/she says a bedtime prayer, attends Sunday school, does a good deed, etc.  Each Sunday he/she will turn in the weekly record and be given points for each Christian behavior recorded during that week.  Vicki Brunner will keep a running tally of points for the child and a special ribbon will be given every time the child reaches 1000 points.

    At the end of the year, on Youth Sunday, a large trophy will be awarded to the high point girl and the high point boy.  Trophies will also be awarded to the high point winner in each Sunday school class.  on Youth Sunday, all children will be asked to wear all the ribbons and beads they earned throughout the year.

Why:  We what our children to grow in the spirit of Christ.  Learning scripture, creeds and Biblical teachings is the foundation for that growth.  Daily prayers strengthens a relationship with Christ and reminds us of what is really important in life.  We want our children to put Christ's teachings into action.  We believe this Christian Character program addressed all three of these points.  In addition, it gives parents an avenue for adults in our church to work with their child on developing a relationship with Jesus.  It also provides an avenue for adults in our church to interact with the youth by listening to them recite memory verses and hear about their good deeds.  It opens up the lines of communication between adults and children.
